When setting your pricing policies, be aware of your local rules and regulations on pricing structure. Historically the sale of electricity by the kWh was restricted to licensed utilities and energy retailers, and energy from charging stations could only be billed via time charging or time plugged in. This is slowly changing.
As of 2023, about half of states and provinces in North America allow billing by the kWh for EV charging services. In some jurisdictions, you may bill by kWh upon approval, and only for specific types of chargers. In the remaining jurisdictions, you must continue to bill EV drivers hourly for the use of your EV chargers. In the future, we expect all jurisdictions will allow -- or even mandate -- site hosts to bill EV drivers by the kWh.
